What's covered from day one
On every plan listed here, these services are covered with no waiting period:
- Routine cleanings and exams (preventive)
- X-rays needed to diagnose a problem
- Emergency exams for pain or infection
- Simple extractions when needed for pain relief
What typically requires a waiting period even on fast-activating plans: fillings (varies by carrier), crowns (6-to-12 months on most plans), implants (usually 12 months). If you need a crown or filling soon, ask your dentist for a pretreatment estimate before enrolling, and confirm the waiting period with your chosen carrier.
Coverage Timing
Not every procedure activates on day one — here is exactly how coverage phases in.
Cleanings, exams, and X-rays
Covered from day one on nearly all PPO plans. This includes routine cleanings, comprehensive exams, and diagnostic X-rays. No waiting period applies to preventive care regardless of which plan you choose from the list below.
Fillings and simple extractions
Day one coverage on Ameritas PrimeStar Care Complete, UnitedHealthcare Primary Dental, Guardian Premier 2.0, and Mutual of Omaha Dental Preferred. Three-month waiting period on Humana Extend 5000. Six-month waiting period on Aetna Dental Direct and Delta Dental PPO.
Crowns, root canals, and bridges
Day one coverage on Ameritas PrimeStar Care Complete only. Six-month waiting period on Humana Extend 5000 and Mutual of Omaha Dental Preferred. Twelve-month waiting period on Delta Dental PPO, Aetna Dental Direct, and Guardian Premier 2.0.
How Timing Works
Effective date vs. waiting period — two separate timelines that determine when you can use your plan. can use your plan.
Your effective date is the day your coverage officially begins. All plans require at least 1 to 3 business days between your enrollment date and your effective date, so you cannot purchase a plan and walk into a dentist's office the same afternoon. Some plans, like Guardian Premier 2.0, set effective dates on the first of the following month, which could mean a wait of a few days or nearly four weeks depending on when you enroll.
A waiting period is an additional delay that applies to specific categories of care, starting from your effective date. For example: if you enroll on June 20 and your effective date is June 21, but your plan has a 6-month waiting period on major work, you cannot file a crown claim until December 21. Understanding both your effective date and the applicable waiting period for the treatment you need is essential before choosing a plan.
