What is a dental insurance waiting period, and how long is it?
A dental insurance waiting period is the time between when your coverage starts and when a category of treatment (fillings, crowns, or implants) becomes eligible for reimbursement.
Waiting periods exist because dental insurers are trying to prevent adverse selection: a situation where someone books an expensive crown, buys a plan, gets reimbursed, and then cancels. Without waiting periods, there would be a meaningful financial incentive to game the enrollment window. Why dental waiting periods exist — and three ways to get around them
Insurers designed waiting periods as a guardrail against a very specific consumer behavior: enrolling in a plan the week before a scheduled procedure, submitting the claim, and then canceling. It sounds cynical, but the economics are real. A single crown reimbursement can cost the insurer $800 to $1,200, which is more than a year of premiums on a budget plan. Without a delay, plans with generous major-work coverage would see immediate and predictable losses from exactly this use case.
Plans that waive waiting periods are not acting charitably. They charge for the privilege, often significantly. There are three situations where paying for a no-wait plan makes genuine sense.
