Delta Dental waiting periods

On an individual PPO plan, preventive care starts on day one, basic work waits about six months, and major work waits twelve. But there is a waiver worth knowing, and the HMO skips waits entirely.

How long are Delta Dental waiting periods?
On a Delta Dental PPO plan: preventive care has no waiting period, basic work such as fillings usually waits 6 months, and major work including crowns, root canals, implants and orthodontics usually waits 12 months. That major wait can be waived with proof of prior comparable coverage with no more than a 63-day gap. The DeltaCare USA HMO and most employer group plans have no waiting periods at all. CoverCapy sells neither insurance nor plans, so this is the plain version.

The waiver

Can the waiting period be waived?

Yes, often. Delta PPO plans commonly waive the major-work waiting period if you had prior comparable major coverage with no more than a 63-day gap before the new plan started, per the brochure language. If you are switching plans and want major work covered sooner, document your prior coverage and ask about the waiver before you enroll.

Waiting-period credit: when a plan counts your prior comparable coverage and shortens or removes a waiting period on the new plan. It usually requires proof and a short maximum gap.
The exception

Which Delta plans have no waiting periods?

Two do. The DeltaCare USA HMO has no waiting periods, no deductible and no annual maximum, because you pay a set copay per service instead. Employer group plans also typically have no waiting periods at any group size. The waits above apply mainly to individual PPO plans you buy on your own. If you need major work soon and choice of dentist is not essential, a DHMO or an employer plan can start paying immediately.
